Treatment of Mono

What Is The Treatment For Mono?

Right now there is no specific treatment for Mono. Treatments given are aimed at decreasing symptoms but not forgetting the virus itself. Luckily, Mono is a self-limiting disease so it tends to just resolve over time. For this reason, antibiotics and antivirals are not recommended for this condition and aspirin since it increases the risk of Reyes syndrome (Swelling of the brain and liver post infection). Supportive therapy is the mainstay of care for treating Mono. The keys to this are rest, hydration, and over the counter pain medication and anti-inflammatories to manage most symptoms. Bed rest is not mandatory but is recommended as physical activity or strain is not recommended especially in early stages of the infection.
